My name is Brianna. I’m from California. I go to California State Polytechnic University where I am an MS candidate in Geology.
What sustainability, energy, and community issues are important to you?
I am a community person! I am an informal educator teaching the public about water conservation and earth related sciences. I perform water quality testing for the City of Santa Ana, Ca and also implement water sustainability needs to the community. More recently, while out researching and camping I have been cleaning the Mojave Desert of trash and flyaway balloons from inner cities.
What exciting projects/research are you working on now?
For my masters thesis I am creating a preliminary stratigraphic interpretation and also performing a paleocurrent analysis of the Western Palo Verde Mountains located in Southeastern California. The focus of this research is to determine the source of sediment from this region, to interpret a time of deposition, as well as investigate if this is the path of the ancestral Colorado River.
What are your plans for the next five years?
I plan to use my masters degree and experience in water quality to continue working alongside the public in water conservation and water sustainability issues. I would love to take it to a more regional level and work for the Department of Interior or National Parks to help keep our parks clean, safe and accessible to the public.
What made you want to apply to SISE?
To try something different! I have the habit to be so preoccupied with work and school constantly that I never take opportunities for myself to grow and tend to my passions. I promised myself that my masters program would be all about new opportunities so I applied to SISE!
What are you most looking forward to doing in Chicago?
I am looking forward to being in a new city! I am excited to work with individuals from all over the world to work together and come up with hopefully something brilliant. I am excited to make these new connections and network for my future, as well as form new memories.
Do you like Cats? If not, are you willing to learn to like cats?
I am not a cat owner, but I do love a cat that is down for a cuddle sesh with when given the chance!
