My name is Dourna Jamshideasli. I am from Iran. I go to the University of Auburn where I am a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering.

What sustainability, energy, and community issues are important to you?

Perilous environmental issues attributed to the widespread burning of fossil fuels as well as rising public concerns over the safety of nuclear power plants have led to the realization that there is a pressing need for adoption of renewable sources of energy. I am interested in utilization of clean energy sources (solar, wind, wave, etc.) and more specifically solar-thermal energy. I am passionate about optimization and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of current solar power plants.

What exciting projects/research are you working on now?

I am working on projects related to thermal energy storage via phase change materials. My work is focused on improving thermal properties of materials and more specifically thermal conductivity. Moreover, I am helping a surgeon with simulation of his surgery procedure. I am also helping undergrad students with stress analysis and optimizing the geometry of bracket designs.

What are your plans for the next five years?

For the immediate future, I am planning to work in the solar power energy industry and consolidate my skills. My far-future goal would be to get involved in research and development projects and spend a part of my time training younger generations.

What made you want to apply to SISE?

Sustainability and energy, the core interests of the program, blended harmoniously with my major research interest which is thermal energy storage. Moreover, the program had a well-defined purpose and it was exciting to see my impact. All these factors coupled together convinced me that I could contribute effectively to the research endeavors in the institute and have fruitful discussions with passionate researchers from diverse backgrounds.

What are you most looking forward to doing in Chicago?

I am mostly looking forward to the new experience including the research and networking. I am also interested in the SISE events. I’d like to explore the nature of Chicago such as lakefront trail Chicago and maybe attend some of the music festivals.

Do you like Cats? If not, are you willing to learn to like cats?

Yes! Cats are my favorite pets. I have grown up along cats and I always love to have them as my pets.
