Harsh Sanghvi

My name is Harsh Sanghvi. I'm from India. I go to the University of Illinois at Chicago where I am a Masters in Industrial Engineering candidate.

What got you interested in sustainability?

Coming from one of the most densely populated cities in the world, I've personally experienced the issues that the world faces when the demand exceeds supply and when resources are diminishing without a viable solution. Knowing that water and energy is at the very heart of many problems all around the world, i've been actively working towards the sustainability field since 2014, be it my final year engineering project or getting a job in a renewable company.

What sustainability, energy, and mobility issues are important to you?

1) Accessibility of clean water
2) Shift from IC engines to hybrid engines
3) Generation of clean energy for match power needs.
4) Location decisions for electric car refueling stations.
5) Clean energy (solar, nuclear and wind) generation and reduction of losses in transmission lines to directly supply power at electric car refueling stations.
6) Data science to improve car pooling to reduce fuel consumption and reduce travel time

What exciting projects/research are you working on now?

Currently working on no projects or research. In fact looking forward to the SISE to actively participate in one.

What are your plans for the next five years?

I plan to use industrial engineering tools in the renewable sector and work for a clean energy company(if given an opportunity) after graduation. I would also like to pet a baby capybara in the foreseeable future.

What made you want to apply to SISE?

SISE holding progress and improvement for humanity through idea synthesis, intelligent innovation and strategic policy making for macro level results is what made me apply to SISE. It would also give me an opportunity to interact with people who I can learn from in my area of interest.

What are you most looking forward to doing in the city?

Ah! Chicago! The cold and windy city with warm and calm people! I look forward to experiencing the museums, the music(rock, metal, jazz, blues, classical) scene, attend concerts and events, and whatever it has to offer in the next 2 years. Basically, anything and everything (except the cold).

Do you like cats? If not, are you willing to learn to like cats?

I like cats! In fact I love cats! I endorse cats to be the most superior species on this planet! A cat is totally not holding me hostage in a box and has absolutely not coerced me to write the previous sentence or pet is exactly 3 and a half times! [I'm a dog person :( but I'm always open to some kitty love]
