My name is Minie Mallikarachchi. I'm from Sri Lanka but live in Florida. I go to the University of South Florida where I am an MA candidate in Global sustainability.
What sustainability, energy, and community issues are important to you?
Sustainability is the hope for the future. My concentration is sustainable energy, so it might be a little bias of me to say, renewable energy is one of the most important aspects of sustainability. The modern world relies on energy to function, unfortunately the world depends heavily on unsustainable sources of energy. Therefore, I think the need for widespread utilization of renewable energy is important. The good news is, as technology improves, renewable energy is becoming more and more feasible. I’m also very much interested in agroecology and sustainable farming. I think it’s important for communities to have access to healthy, affordable food, that is ethically produced.
What exciting projects/research are you working on now?
As of now I don’t have specific projects, but in the fall, I will be working on a few projects (Don’t have the details planned out)
What are your plans for the next five years?
This is always a difficult question for me to answer. I’m still very much figuring out what I want to do in my life. I’ll be graduating in December and starting my career in sustainability. Other than that, I hope to be successful and living a life filled with adventure and joy.
What made you want to apply to SISE?
I heard about SISE from a couple of my class mates and thought it would be perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge on sustainability.
