My name is Elizabeth Nixon. I'm from North Carolina. I go to Eastern Illinois University where I am a Masters in Biological Sciences and Sustainable Energy candidate.
What got you interested in sustainability?
I've been interested in sustainability since before I knew what it was. I was lucky enough to grow up in a wooded area and I remember that I used to get very upset when my parents would have to cut down a tree. As I got older I have kept that love of nature and the desire to preserve it.
What sustainability, energy, and mobility issues are important to you?
I would like to help create a world where I can take a long, hot shower, eat a steak, or drive my car without feeling guilty for the damage that I know is done for me and everyone else to enjoy those things. With enough innovation and hard-work we should be able to have a high standard of living without hurting the planet or each-other.
What exciting projects/research are you working on now?
I am currently working on my Masters Thesis where I am attempting to discover a co-product potential for algal cake byproduct from a cosmetics company.
What are your plans for the next five years?
Graduate with my Masters, find a job that I enjoy, and get a dog.
What made you want to apply to SISE?
The program was highly recommended to me by an alumni.
What are you most looking forward to doing in the city?
I would like to go through a couple of the museums. I am also looking forward to walking on the lake front.
Do you like cats? If not, are you willing to learn to like cats?
I do like cats, I actually like most mammals but if I had to pick favorites I would go with horses (I have one, his name is Razz and he's my baby) and dogs.
