Mehdi Zeyghami

My name's Mehdi Zeyghami. I'm from Florida. I go to school at the University of South Florida where I am a PhD Mechanical Engineering candidate.

What got you interested in sustainability?

When I started the grad school my professor suggested that I work on a non-conventional cooling method for buildings as my thesis. That was the first time I came to know renewable and sustainable energy systems. Since that time I kept my choices in the same direction and currently am at the last part of my PhD program working on sustainable energy systems for buildings.

What sustainability, energy, and mobility issues are important to you?

For me applications of sustainable energy systems in buildings are very interesting. I have spent 4 years during my PhD program investigating the use of solar energy to produce cooling and application of passive cooling to reduce the energy demand of the buildings. End use energy sustainability is more important to me because any improvement in that side will reduce the energy resources demand in the primary level.

What exciting projects/research are you working on now?

I am working on development of a passive cooling approach for buildings that does not require water and energy use. Such a project can have positive effects on reducing the energy use of buildings.

What are your plans for the next five years?

I would like to join industry and work toward real life projects regarding the use of sustainable energy systems in the buildings for cooling, heating and electricity generation.

What made you want to apply to SISE?

I want to be in contact with other people with the same passion for renewable and sustainable energy system.

What are you most looking forward to doing in the city?

I have not been to Chicago before. But I would mostly like to visit UIC research facilities and network with the scientific community there.

Do you like cats? If not, are you willing to learn to like cats?

As a dog person I tried a few times to like cats, but it seems they don't like me. If there is a way to generate mutual good feelings (I need to learn what to do to make a cat likes me). I am open to try it :)
