2015 Participant Breakdown

Countries represented at SISE 2014!

Countries represented at SISE 2014!

33 participants from around the United States - and the world! - were selected from a pool of 60 applicants to join us from August 6-18 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. SISE'ers are all offered free lodging with us on campus, and many are offered partial travel scholarships so they can attend the program with minimal financial impact to them. (And, there's no program fee!)

There were more male participants than female (61%/39%). 51% identified as a racial minority - including Asian, African, or mixed descent - and 12% identified as Latinx. Just under 1/2 of participants were in their early 20s. An interesting stat was that almost 40% of participants were not enrolled in school! The cohort represented 29 different majors and came from 23 different academic institutions. Check out the stats below!

The Program

Thanks, UI LABS!

Thanks, UI LABS!

The program this year focused on sustainability through the lens of smart cities and digital manufacturing issues. This was a first for the SISE program, which collaborated heavily with UI LABS to produce the content of the program. SISE'ers spent two weeks with us to:

  • engage with presentations and SISE faculty, drawn from awesome Chicago-based speakers and national organizations;
  • tour Argonne National Laboratory, UI LABS, WaterSaver Faucet Co., and Method Soap Factory;
  • network and socialize, as they did at the Clean Energy Trust sponsored networking dinner, and the annual closing convocation at the Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier; and
  • tackle real-world issues facing UIC, Chicago, and the world by developing unique visions through large and small, competitive, team-based research projects.

Project Results

On August 18, eight groups of SISE'ers provided eight unique visions to find ways to solve sustainability issues round Chicago through the use of digital manufacturing and the integration of the internet of things. Each vision was developed over the two weeks with the help of mentors and the expertise of our 2015 SISE crew. Each project was presented before a panel of judges on the final day.

Group #3 (Chicago Cubes) took first place overall. Group #1 (Sprout) and #4 (Sustainable Food Revolution) tied for second, and Group #7 (Smart Vegetated Floating Islands) came in fourth. (At SISE, though, we're all winners.)
